5 Eye-Catching Ways a Designer Uses Statement Wallpaper in High-End Homes

Nothing transforms a space like a bold accent wall, especially when it features stunning patterned wallpaper. Whether you want to revamp a room quickly and dramatically or just add some visual interest, creating a statement wall is the way to go and easy to do! Here’s how the pros do it...

1. Determine Whether to Play it Safe or Go Big and Bold

Wallpaper can be a great way to add flair to a small space, such as an accent wall in a tiny room or the end of a narrow corridor. Some wallpapers are designed as panels that fit perfectly in these areas, creating a stunning visual effect. They are like pieces of art on the wall! One of my favorite brands is Designers Guild, which offers a charming and quirky English style.

2. Creatively Mix and Match to Add Contrast

When decorating with wallpaper, you don't have to stick to one pattern. You can create a contrast by using a textured seagrass on one wall and a smooth floral on another. This will give your room a stylish and sophisticated look.

3. Select Furnishings that Complement or Enhance the Look

A bold pattern can be a great way to add personality and flair to a room. But how do you ensure it is consistent with the rest of the decor? One tip is to coordinate it with the matching drapery fabric. Textile designers will often duplicate patterns in different mediums.

You can also use the colors from the pattern as a guide for choosing the furniture, bedding, and carpet for the room. I did that for this 16-year-old's room, which turned out amazing.

4. Use Wallpaper Beyond the Room's Walls

One of my favorite tricks is to apply wallpaper behind built-ins. It's a simple way to spice up a room without going overboard. Don't shy away from bold patterns. I used this floral paper for a client's daughter's room to transform her childish style into a more sophisticated and modern one that would last for years.

5. Pair the Paper with Curated Art or Let it Shine Alone

Wallpaper can be more than just a background for your walls. It can also complement your art collection. But be careful not to create a clash of colors and patterns. Opt for textured neutrals or two-tone patterns that are simple and elegant. You don't want to end up with a "crayon box" explosion!

P.S. There really are no rules when it comes to wallpaper. The sky is the limit. Contact us, and let's dream up a statement-making home together.
