5 Major Shifts Coming to the Interior Design Industry in 2023

Interior design trends evolve slowly, as opposed to fashion which changes seasonally. Both industries however constantly refer to decades past to reinvent new looks. My projects last for years, so what I have in mind for a client may not be implemented for some time.

Rather than focusing on fads on social media, I truly believe it's more important to watch how culture and lifestyle change the way we live and feel in our homes. So below I’m sharing the 2023 timeless trends you’ll be able to enjoy for years to come…

Focus on Wellness

From new kitchen appliances such as the Steam Oven to newly designed home spas and gyms, wellness is a trend that keeps creeping into our homes and is here to stay.

Clients are requesting more calming spaces, especially bathrooms. I am putting in infrared saunas and designing vanities with warming drawers to store fluffy towels. My client in Puerto Rico has specifically asked for a particular size pool, ice bath, and sauna so that he may follow his buddy Laird Hamilton’s XPT workout in his backyard.

For my clients in Greenwich, CT, I am designing a pantry specifically for all the blenders and smoothy equipment. I love including elements that create a positive peaceful environment like an Amethyst Crystal that rids the space of negative energy. Wellness is the ultimate longevity trend in home interiors.

The Bespoke Curve

The white boucle marshmallow sofa and quilted forms we have been seeing are evolving into something more tailored. The famous RH Cloud Sofa is being replaced by more structured seating. Rather than sinking into a fluff of down which you need someone to pull you out of, instead, we prefer an ergonomically correct style.

Furniture is looking sculptural in a sinuous way, following the wellness trend it's soft and calming. These tailored shapes are about the knife edge seams with very little trim or exposed legs. The bespoke curve is also popping up in architecture as smooth frameless archways and built-in nooks that are reminiscent of adobe structures. The Soraya Sofa is a beautiful example of this style.

It's All about the Weave

Continuing with the theme of bespoke is the elegance of sophisticated wovens and patterns seen in textiles and natural materials such as wood and stone. Rattan is no longer beachy, it's elegant and sophisticated, woven into complex shapes. The Wingman Woven Lounge Chair is the perfect sophisticated accent chair for your living room or reading nook.

Also, the strong veining of marble is being highlighted not just on your kitchen countertop, but as an entire wall. The stronger the pattern the better, the magenta hues and veins of a King Luis Marble are show-stopping, though I do fear that this one will get dated like the green granite countertop of decades past.

Weaves are also seen in the comeback of the chevron wood floor, this one I love. It is timelessly classic and stunning in french white oak.

Warm Minimalism

Keeping in mind the trend toward wellness, natural color palates are replacing stark all-white interiors with black accents. A warm tone is seen in materials and paint colors. Imagine the desert at sunset, that is the future of the home color palette: combos of clay, pale pinks, and deep magenta mixed with browns and olives.

Bright accents such as neon have a place like black was to white, but I don't see it as a fundamental trend.

I love the warm neutrals in the Cascade One-Drawer Nightstand for its calming color palette and glazed burlap finish.

Hellenistic Revival

This is a trend that I'm keeping my dubious eye on. The Hellenistic Revival stands on its own promoting luxury through sculpture and art. It reflects our culture's fascination with the grand palaces of the Mediterranean. Infuse this style into your home with sculptures like the Barbados Bust (below) for a modern yet classic take on this trend.

The strong marbles fall into this category along with mythical god images and gold-trimmed pottery. Opulence always has a fan group who is open to corinthian columns, wallpaper with neoclassical influences, mirrors galore...and of course painted ceilings!

Forecasting trends is fun but when designing they all need to be implemented with the client in mind. After all, as an Interior Designer, my sole mission is to create a home. That means creating a safe haven and a comfort zone. A place where my clients can truly be themselves.
